A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Tune Name: EIN’ FESTE BURG
Words: Martin Luther (1483-1546);
Trans. Frederick H. Hedge (1805-1890)
Music: Martin Luther (1483-1546), alt.

A mighty fortress is our God,
A bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and pow’r are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God’s own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And tho’ this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph thro’ us.
The Prince of Darkness grim –
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly pow’rs,
No thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Thro’ Him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also;
The body they may kill:
God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

A Rock That Stands Forever

Tune Name: NYLAND
Words: Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676)
Music: Finnish Folk Melody

A Rock that stands forever
Is Christ, my Righteousness!
In Him I stand unfearing,
In everlasting bliss!
Christ is my boast and glory –
All wrath for me is o’er;
The judgment of the sinner
Affrighteth me no more.

There is no condemnation,
There is no hell for me!
The torment and the fire
My eyes shall never see!
For me there is no sentence,
For me there is no sting,
For Christ, my Lord, who saved me,
Will shield me with His wing!

No hunger, Lord, nor thirsting,
No danger, fear, nor fight,
No foe, no tribulation,
No throne, nor pow’r, nor might,
No height, no depth, no creature
That has been or can be
Can pluck me from Thy bosom –
Can sever me from Thee!

My heart in joy upleapeth –
Grief cannot linger there!
O Jesus, Lord in glory,
Thou art my sunshine fair!
The Source of all my singing
Is Jesus there above,
The Sun that shines upon me
Is Jesus and His Love!

And Can It Be

Tune Name: SAGINA
Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
Music: Thomas Campbell (1777-1844)

And can it be that I should gain
An int’rest in the Saviour’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

He left His Father’s throne above –
So free, so infinite His grace –
Humbled Himself in matchless love
And bled for Adam’s helpless race;
‘Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me!
‘Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me!

Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray,
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Be Thou My Vision

Tune Name: SLANE
Words: Ancient Irish Hymn;
Trans. Mary E. Byrne (1880-1931);
Versified by Eleanor H. Hull (1860-1935)
Music: Traditional Irish Melody

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art;
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son,
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise;
Thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heav’n’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Beneath the Cross of Jesus

Tune Name: ST. CHRISTOPHER
Words: Elizabeth Clephane (1830-1869)
Music: Frederick C. Maker (1844-1927)

Beneath the cross of Jesus
I fain would take my stand,
The shadow of a mighty rock
Within a weary land,
A home within the wilderness,
A rest upon the way,
From the burning of the noontide heat,
And the burden of the day.

O safe and happy shelter!
O refuge tried and sweet!
O trysting place where heaven’s love
And heaven’s justice meet!
As to the holy patriarch
That wondrous dream was given,
So seems my Saviour’s cross to me
A ladder up to heaven.

There lies beneath its shadow,
But on the farther side,
The darkness of an awful grave
That gapes both deep and wide:
And there between us stands the cross,
Two arms outstretched to save,
Like a watchman set to guard the way
From that eternal grave.

Upon that cross of Jesus,
Mine eye at times can see
The very dying form of One
Who suffered there for me;
And from my smitten heart with tears,
Two wonders I confess –
The wonders of His glorious love,
And my unworthiness.

I take, O cross, thy shadow
For my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than
The sunshine of His face;
Content to let the world go by,
To know no gain nor loss,
My sinful self my only shame,
My glory all – the cross!

Day by Day

Tune Name: BLOTT EN DAG
Words: Carolina V. Sandell-Berg (1832-1903);
Trans. Andrew L. Skoog (1856-1934)
Music: Oscar Ahnfelt (1813-1882)

Day by day and with each passing moment,
Strength I find to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best,
Lovingly its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.

Ev’ry day the Lord Himself is near me
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear and cheer me,
He whose name is Counsellor and Pow’r.
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
This the pledge to me He made.

Help me then in ev’ry tribulation
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting;
E’er to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till I reach the promised land.

Does Jesus Care?

Tune Name: MY SAVIOUR CARES
Words: Frank E. Graeff (1860-1919)
Music: J. Lincoln Hall (1866-1930)

Does Jesus care when my heart is pained
Too deeply for mirth or song,
As the burdens press,
And the cares distress,
And the day grows weary and long?

Refrain:
O yes, He cares; I know He cares;
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary, the long nights dreary,
I know my Saviour cares.

Does Jesus care when my way is dark
With a nameless dread and fear?
As the daylight fades
Into deep night shades,
Does He care enough to be near?

(Refrain)

Does Jesus care when I’ve tried and failed
To resist some temptation strong;
When in my deep grief
I find no relief,
Tho’ my tears flow all the night long?

(Refrain)

Does Jesus care when I’ve said good-bye,
To the dearest on earth to me,
And my sad heart aches
Till it nearly breaks,
Is this aught to Him? Does He see?

(Refrain)

God Leads Us Along

Tune Name: GOD LEADS US
Words & Music: G. A. Young (19th C.)

In shady, green pastures, so rich and so sweet,
God leads His dear children along;
Where the water’s cool flow bathes the weary one’s feet,
God leads His dear children along.

Refrain:
Some thro’ the waters, some thro’ the flood,
Some thro’ the fire, but all thro’ the blood;
Some thro’ great sorrow, but God gives a song,
In the night season and all the day long.

Sometimes on the mount where the sun shines so bright,
God leads His dear children along;
Sometimes in the valley, in darkest of night,
God leads His dear children along.

(Refrain)

Tho’ sorrows befall us and Satan oppose,
God leads His dear children along;
Thro’ grace we can conquer, defeat all our foes,
God leads His dear children along.

(Refrain 2x)

He Leadeth Me

Tune Name: HE LEADETH ME
Words: Joseph H. Gilmore (1834-1918)
Music: William B. Bradbury (1816-1868)

He leadeth me, O blessed thought!
O words with heav’nly comfort fraught!
Whate’er I do, where’er I be,
Still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

Refrain:
He leadeth me! He leadeth me!
By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful foll’wer I would be,
For by His hand He leadeth me.

Sometimes ‘mid scenes of deepest gloom,
Sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom,
By waters still, o’er troubled sea,
Still ’tis His hand that leadeth me.

(Refrain)

Lord, I would place my hand in Thine,
Nor ever murmur nor repine;
Content, whatever lot I see,
Since ’tis my God that leadeth me.

(Refrain)

And when my task on earth is done,
When by Thy grace the vict’ry’s won,
E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,
Since God thro’ Jordan leadeth me.

(Refrain)

Hiding in Thee

Tune Name: HIDING IN THEE
Words: William O. Cushing (1823-1902)
Music: Ira D. Sankey (1840-1908)

O safe to the Rock that is higher than I,
My soul in its conflicts and sorrows would fly;
So sinful, so weary, Thine, Thine would I be;
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

Refrain:
Hiding in Thee, Hiding in Thee,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,”
I’m hiding in Thee.

In the calm of the noontide, in sorrow’s lone hour,
In times when temptation casts o’er me its pow’r;
In the tempests of life, on its wide, heaving sea,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

(Refrain)

How oft in the conflict, when pressed by the foe,
I have fled to my Refuge and breathed out my woe;
How often, when trials like sea-billows roll,
Have I hidden in Thee, O Thou Rock of my soul.

(Refrain)

How Firm a Foundation

Tune Name: FOUNDATION
Words: Rippon’s Selection of Hymns, 1787
Music: Joseph Funk’s Genuine Church Music, 1832

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am Thy God, I will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My gracious, omnipotent hand.

“When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow,
For I will be with thee, thy trials to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

“When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace all-sufficient shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

“The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake!”

How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds

Tune Name: ST. PETER
Words: John Newton (1725-1807)
Music: Alexander R. Reinagle (1799-1877)

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
‘Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest.

Dear Name! The Rock on which I build,
My Shield and Hiding-place,
My never-failing Treas’ry filled
With boundless stores of grace.

Jesus! My Shepherd, Saviour, Friend,
My Prophet, Priest, and King,
My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End,
Accept the praise I bring.

Weak is the effort of my heart,
And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see Thee as Thou art,
I’ll praise Thee as I ought.

Till then I would Thy love proclaim
With ev’ry fleeting breath;
And may the music of Thy Name
Refresh my soul in death!

I Am His, and He Is Mine

Tune Name: EVERLASTING LOVE
Words: George W. Robinson (1838-1877)
Music: James Mountain (1843-1933)

Loved with everlasting love,
Led by grace that love to know;
Spirit, breathing from above,
Thou hast taught me it is so!
Oh, this full and perfect peace!
Oh, this transport all divine!
In a love which cannot cease,
I am His, and He is mine;
In a love which cannot cease,
I am His, and He is mine.

Heav’n above is softer blue,
Earth around is sweeter green!
Something lives in ev’ry hue
Christless eyes have never seen:
Birds with gladder songs o’erflow,
Flow’rs with deeper beauties shine,
Since I know, as now I know,
I am His, and He is mine;
Since I know, as now I know,
I am His, and He is mine.

Things that once were wild alarms
Cannot now disturb my rest;
Closed in everlasting arms,
Pillowed on the loving breast.
Oh, to lie forever here,
Doubt, and care, and self resign,
While He whispers in my ear,
I am His, and He is mine;
While He whispers in my ear,
I am His, and He is mine.

His forever, only His;
Who the Lord and me shall part?
Ah, with what a rest of bliss
Christ can fill the loving heart!
Heav’n and earth may fade and flee,
Firstborn light in gloom decline;
But while God and I shall be,
I am His, and He is mine;
But while God and I shall be,
I am His, and He is mine.

I Need Thee, Precious Saviour

Tune Name: MUNICH
Words: Frederick Whitfield (1829-1904)
Music: Neuvermehrtes Meiningisches Gesangbuch, 1693
Harm. Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)

I need Thee, precious Saviour!
Oh, Thou art all to me;
Before the throne forever,
I stand complete in Thee.
Tho’ Satan loud accuses,
Yet I can ever see,
The blood of Christ most precious,
The sinner’s perfect plea.

I need Thee, precious Saviour!
For I am very poor;
A stranger and a pilgrim,
I have no earthly store.
I need Thy love, Lord Jesus,
To cheer me on my way,
To guide my doubting footsteps,
To be my strength and stay.

I need Thee, precious Saviour!
I need a friend like Thee:
A friend to soothe and comfort,
A friend to care for me;
I need Thy heart, Lord Jesus,
To feel each anxious care;
To bear my ev’ry burden,
And all my sorrow share.

I need Thee, precious Saviour!
I need Thee day by day,
To fill me with Thy fullness,
To lead me on my way:
I need Thy Holy Spirit
To teach me what I am –
To show me more of Jesus,
To point me to the Lamb.

I need Thee, precious Saviour!
And hope to see Thee soon,
Encircled with the rainbow,
And seated on Thy throne.
There, with Thy blood-bought people,
My joy shall ever be,
To sing Thy praise, Lord Jesus,
And ever gaze on Thee.

I Will Never, Never Leave Thee

Tune Name: CONSTANCY
Words & Music: Anonymous

I will never, never leave thee,
I will never thee forsake!
I will guard, and save, and keep thee,
For My Name and mercy’s sake!
Fear no evil, fear no evil,
Only all My counsel take,
For I’ll never, never leave thee,
I will never thee forsake!

When the storm is raging round thee,
Call on Me in humble prayer,
I will fold My arms about thee,
Guard thee with the tend’rest care;
In the trial, in the trial
I will make thy pathway clear.
For I’ll never, never leave thee,
I will never thee forsake!

When the sky above is glowing,
And around thee all is bright,
Pleasure like a river flowing,
All things tending to delight,
I’ll be with thee, I’ll be with thee,
I will guide thy steps aright.
For I’ll never, never leave thee,
I will never thee forsake!

When thy soul is dark and clouded,
Filled with doubt, and grief, and care,
Thro’ the mist by which ’tis shrouded,
I will make a light appear.
And the banner, and the banner
Of My love I will uprear.
For I’ll never, never leave thee,
I will never thee forsake!

If I Gained the World

Tune Name: OM JAG AGDE ALLT
Words: Anna Olander (1861-1939)
Music: Swedish Melody

If I gained the world, but lost the Saviour,
Were my life worth living for a day?
Could my yearning heart find rest and comfort
In the things that soon must pass away?
If I gained the world, but had no Saviour,
Would my gain be worth the life-long strife?
Are all earthly pleasures worth comparing
For a moment with a Christ-filled life?

Had I wealth and love in fullest measure,
And a name revered both far and near,
Yet no hope beyond, no harbor waiting,
Where my storm-tossed vessel I could steer;
If I gained the world, but had no Saviour,
Who endured the cross and died for me,
Could then all the world afford a refuge,
Whither, in my anguish, I might flee?

O what emptiness! – without the Saviour
‘Mid the sins and sorrows here below!
And eternity, how dark without Him!
Only night and tears and endless woe!
What, tho’ I might live without the Saviour,
When I come to die, how would it be?
O to face the valley’s gloom without Him!
And without Him all eternity!

O the joy of having all in Jesus!
What a balm the broken heart to heal!
Ne’er a sin so great, but He’ll forgive it,
Nor a sorrow that He does not feel!
If I have but Jesus, only Jesus,
Nothing else in all the world beside –
O then ev’rything is mine in Jesus;
For my needs and more He will provide.

Lord, Enthroned in Heavenly Splendor

Tune Name: LAUDA ANIMA
Words: George H. Bourne (1840-1925)
Music: John Goss (1800-1880)

Lord, enthroned in heav’nly splendor,
First-begotten, from the dead,
Thou alone, our strong Defender,
Liftest up Thy people’s head.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Jesus, true and living Bread!

Prince of Life, for us Thou livest,
By Thy body souls are healed;
Prince of Peace, Thy peace Thou givest,
By Thy blood is pardon sealed;
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Word of God in flesh revealed.

Paschal Lamb! Thine off’ring finished.
Once for all when Thou wast slain,
In its fulness undiminished
Shall for evermore remain,
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Cleansing souls from every stain.

Great High Priest of our profession,
Through the veil Thou ent’redst in;
By Thy mighty intercession
Grace and mercy Thou dost win;
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Only sacrifice for sin.

Life-imparting heav’nly manna,
Stricken Rock, with streaming side,
Heav’n and earth with loud hosanna,
Worship Thee, the Lamb who died;
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Ris’n, ascended, glorified!

Lord, Speak to Me

Tune Name: CANONBURY
Words: Frances R. Havergal (1836-1879)
Music: Robert Schumann (1810-1856)

Lord, speak to me, that I may speak
In living echoes of Thy tone;
As Thou hast sought, so let me seek
Thy erring children lost and lone.

O lead me, Lord, that I may lead
The wand’ring and the wav’ring feet;
O feed me, Lord, that I may feed
Thy hung’ring ones with manna sweet.

O teach me, Lord, that I may teach
The precious things Thou dost impart;
And wing my words, that they may reach
The hidden depths of many a heart.

O give Thine own sweet rest to me,
That I may speak with soothing pow’r
A word in season, as from Thee,
To weary ones in needful hour.

O fill me with Thy fullness, Lord,
Until my very heart o’erflow
In kindling thought and glowing word,
Thy love to tell, Thy praise to show.

O use me, Lord, use even me,
Just as Thou wilt, and when, and where,
Until Thy blessed face I see,
Thy rest, Thy joy, Thy glory share.

Not a Disappointment

Tune Name: ROOM FOR JESUS
Words: Mary W. Booth, alt.
Music: C. C. Williams, 19th C.

He is not a disappointment;
Christ has saved my soul from sin;
All the guilt and all the anguish
Which oppressed my heart within.
He has banished, by His presence,
All that stole my inner peace;
And He gives me full assurance
That His love will never cease.

He is not a disappointment;
Christ doth sanctify my soul,
Cleanse me from my heart corruption,
Purify and make me whole;
He removed the sin-ward proneness,
Stamps His image in its place,
For He wins me by the beauty
And unveiling of His face.

He is not a disappointment;
Christ is coming by and by;
In my heart I have the witness
That the day is drawing nigh.
All the scoffers may despise me
And no change around may see;
But He tells me He is coming,
And His Word assureth me.

He is not a disappointment;
Christ is all in all to me –
Saviour, Sanctifier, Sov’reign –
The unchanging God is He;
He has won my heart’s devotion,
And He meets my ev’ry need;
He is not a disappointment,
For He satisfies indeed.

O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee

Tune Name: MARYTON
Words: Washington Gladden (1836-1918)
Music: H. Percy Smith (1825-1898)

O Master, let me walk with Thee
In lowly paths of service free;
Tell me Thy secret; help me bear
The strain of toil, the fret of care.

Help me the slow of heart to move
By some clear, winning word of love;
Teach me the wayward feet to stay,
And guide them in the homeward way.

Teach me Thy patience! still with Thee
In closer, dearer company,
In work that keeps faith sweet and strong,
In trust that triumphs over wrong;

In hope that sends a shining ray
Far down the future’s broad’ning way,
In peace that only Thou canst give,
With Thee, O Master, let me live.

O Teach Me What it Meaneth

Tune Name: RUTHERFORD
Words: Lucy Ann Bennett (1850-1927)
Music: Chretien Urhan (1790-1845)

O teach me what it meaneth,
That cross uplifted high,
With One, the Man of Sorrows,
Condemned to bleed and die!
O teach me what it cost Thee
To make a sinner whole;
And teach me, Saviour, teach me
The value of a soul!

O teach me what it meaneth,
That sacred crimson tide,
The blood and water flowing
From Thine own wounded side.
Teach me that if none other
Had sinned, but I alone,
Yet still Thy blood, Lord Jesus,
Thine only, must atone.

O teach me what it meaneth,
Thy love beyond compare,
The love that reacheth deeper
Than depths of self-despair!
Yes, teach me, till there gloweth
In this poor heart of mine
Some feeble, pale reflection
Of that pure love of Thine.

O teach me what it meaneth,
For I am full of sin,
And grace alone can reach me,
And love alone can win.
O teach me, for I need Thee,
I have no help beside –
The chief of all the sinners
For whom the Saviour died?

O Infinite Redeemer!
I bring no other plea;
Because Thou dost invite me
I cast myself on Thee.
Because Thou dost accept me
I love and I adore;
Because Thy love constraineth,
I’ll praise Thee ever more!

Our Great Saviour

Tune Name: HYFRYDOL
Words: J. Wilbur Chapman (1859-1918)
Music: Rowland H. Prichard (1811-1887);
Arr. Robert Harkness

Jesus! what a Friend for sinners!
Jesus! Lover of my soul;
Friends may fail me, foes assail me,
He, my Saviour, makes me whole.

Refrain:
Hallelujah! what a Saviour!
Hallelujah! what a Friend!
Saving, helping, keeping, loving,
He is with me to the end.

Jesus! what a Strength in weakness!
Let me hid myself in Him;
Tempted, tried, and sometimes failing,
He, my Strength, my vict’ry wins.

(Refrain)

Jesus! what a Help in sorrow!
While the billows o’er me roll,
Even when my heart is breaking,
He, my Comfort, helps my soul.

(Refrain)

Jesus! what a Guide and Keeper!
While the tempest still is high,
Storms about me, night o’ertakes me,
He, my Pilot, hears my cry.

(Refrain)

Jesus! I do fully trust Him,
More than all in Him I find,
He hath granted me forgiveness,
I am His, and He is mine.

(Refrain)

Safe in the Arms of Jesus

Tune Name: REFUGE
Words: Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915)
Music: William H. Doane (1832-1915)

Safe in the arms of Jesus,
Safe on His gentle breast,
There, by His love o’ershaded,
Sweetly my soul shall rest.
Hark! ’tis the voice of angels
Borne in a song to me
Over the fields of glory,
Over the jasper sea.

Refrain:
Safe in the arms of Jesus,
Safe on His gentle breast,
There, by His love o’ershaded,
Sweetly my soul shall rest.

Safe in the arms of Jesus,
Safe from corroding care,
Safe from the world’s temptations –
Sin cannot harm me there.
Free from the blight of sorrow,
Free from my doubts and fears;
Only a few more trials,
Only a few more tears!

(Refrain)

Jesus, my heart’s dear refuge,
Jesus has died for me;
Firm on the Rock of Ages
Ever my trust shall be.
Here let me wait with patience,
Wait till the night is o’er,
Wait till I see the morning
Break on the golden shore.

(Refrain)

Tell Me the Story of Jesus

Tune Name: THE SWEETEST STORY
Words: Fanny J. Crosby
Music: John R. Sweney

Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart ev’ry word;
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.
Tell how the angels, in chorus,
Sang as they welcomed His birth,
“Glory to God in the highest!
Peace and good tidings to earth.”

Refrain:
Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart ev’ry word;
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.

Fasting alone in the desert,
Tell of the days that are past,
How for our sins He was tempted,
Yet was triumphant at last.
Tell of the years of His labor,
Tell of the sorrow He bore,
He was despised and afflicted,
Homeless, rejected and poor.

(Refrain)

Tell of the cross where they nailed Him,
Writhing in anguish and pain;
Tell of the grave where they laid Him,
Tell how He liveth again.
Love in that story so tender,
Clearer than ever I see:
Stay, let me weep while you whisper,
Love paid the ransom for me.

(Refrain)

To God Be the Glory

Tune Name: TO GOD BE THE GLORY
Words: Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915)
Music: William H. Doane (1832-1915)

To God be the glory, great things He hath done,
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Refrain:
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father thro’ Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory, great things He hath done.

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
To ev’ry believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

(Refrain)

Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,
And great our rejoicing thro’ Jesus the Son;
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

(Refrain)

Unto the Hills

Tune Name: SANDON
Words: J. D. Sutherland Campbell (1845-1914)
Paraphrase of Psalm 121
Music: Charles H. Purday (1799-1885)

Unto the hills around do I lift up
My longing eyes;
O whence for me shall my salvation come,
From whence arise?
From God, the Lord, doth come my certain aid,
From God, the Lord, who heav’n and earth hath made.

He will not suffer that thy foot be moved:
Safe shalt thou be.
No careless slumber shall His eyelids close,
Who keepeth thee.
Behold, our God, the Lord, He slumbereth ne’er,
Who keepeth Israel in His holy care.

Jehovah is Himself thy keeper true,
Thy changeless shade;
Jehovah thy defense on thy right hand
Himself hath made.
And thee no sun by day shall ever smite;
No moon shall harm thee in the silent night.

From ev’ry evil shall He keep thy soul,
From ev’ry sin;
Jehovah shall preserve thy going out,
Thy coming in.
Above thee watching, He whom we adore
Shall keep thee henceforth, yea, for evermore.

When Morning Gilds the Skies

Tune Name: LAUDES DOMINI
Words: From the German (19th C.);
Trans. Edward Caswall (1814-1878)
Music: Joseph Barnby (1838-1896)

When morning gilds the skies,
My heart awaking cries:
May Jesus Christ be praised;
Alike at work or prayer
To Jesus I repair:
May Jesus Christ be praised.

Does sadness fill my mind,
A solace here I find:
May Jesus Christ be praised;
Or fades my earthly bliss,
My comfort still is this:
May Jesus Christ be praised.

In heav’n’s eternal bliss
The loveliest strain is this,
May Jesus Christ be praised;
The pow’rs of darkness fear,
When this sweet chant they hear:
May Jesus Christ be praised.

Be this, while life is mine,
My canticle divine,
May Jesus Christ be praised;
Be this th’eternal song,
Thro’ all the ages long:
May Jesus Christ be praised.

When We All Get to Heaven

Tune Name: HEAVEN
Words: Eliza E. Hewitt (1851-1920)
Music: Emily D. Wilson (1865-1942)

Sing the wondrous love of Jesus,
Sing His mercy and His grace;
In the mansions bright and blessed,
He’ll prepare for us a place.

Refrain:
When we all get to heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory.

While we walk the pilgrim pathway,
Clouds will overspread the sky;
But when trav’ling days are over,
Not a shadow, not a sigh.

(Refrain)

Let us, then, be true and faithful,
Trusting, serving ev’ry day;
Just one glimpse of Him in glory
Will the toils of earth repay.

(Refrain)

Onward to the prize before us!
Soon His beauty we’ll behold;
Soon the pearly gates will open,
We shall tread the streets of gold.

(Refrain)

Who Is He in Yonder Stall?

Tune Name: WHO IS HE
Words & Music: Benjamin Russell Hanby (1833-1867)

Who is He in yonder stall
At Whose feet the shepherds fall?
Who is He in deep distress
Fasting in the wilderness?

Refrain:
‘Tis the Lord! O wondrous story!
‘Tis the Lord! the King of glory!
At His feet we humbly fall.
Crown Him! Crown Him, Lord of all!

Who is He the people bless
For His words of gentleness?
Who is He to Whom they bring
All the sick and sorrowing?

(Refrain)

Who is He that stands and weeps
At the grave where Laz’rus sleeps?
Who is He the gath’ring throng
Greet with loud triumphant song?

(Refrain)

Lo! at midnight, Who is He
Prays in dark Gethsemane?
Who is He on yonder tree,
Dies in grief and agony?

(Refrain)

Who is He that from the grave
Comes to heal and help and save?
Who is He that from His throne
Rules through all the world alone?

(Refrain)

With Harps and with Viols

Tune Name: THE NEW SONG
Words: Arthur T. Pierson (1837-1911)
Music: Philip P. Bliss (1838-1876)

With harps and with viols there stands a great throng
In the presence of Jesus, and sings this new song:

Refrain:
Unto Him who hath loved us and washed us from sin,
Unto Him be the glory for ever. Amen.

All these once were sinners, defiled in His sight,
Now arrayed in pure garments in praise they unite:

(Refrain)

He maketh the rebel a priest and a king,
He hath bought us and taught us this new song to sing:

(Refrain)

How helpless and hopeless we sinners had been,
If He never had loved us till cleansed from our sin:

(Refrain)

Aloud in His praises our voices shall ring,
So that others, believing, this new song shall sing:

(Refrain)

A Hymn of Praise

Sheet Music

Tune Name: JOYFUL PRAISE
Words & Music: Karissa Carlson

Praise ye the Lord, ye saints of His,
Rejoice and of Him sing;
And let the children of our God
Be joyful in their King.

Great is the Lord and of great pow’r,
His wisdom, who can know?
Who humbleth Himself to behold
All they that dwell below.

To all who call upon His name –
Jehovah, Adonai –
He promises He will be near
And He will hear their cry.

The Lord takes pleasure in His own,
The sheep that know His voice;
For He preserves and greatly loves
The people of His choice.

O righteous Lord of heav’n and earth,
We praise Thy holy name;
And talk of all Thy wondrous works,
Thy glory to proclaim.

His Precious Blood

Words & Music: Karissa Carlson
“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:” (1 Peter 1:18-19)

Enthroned above on God’s right hand,
God’s precious Son, the great I AM;
But He came down to save my soul,
He took my place to make me whole.

Refrain:
His precious blood was shed for me,
Christ paid the price on Calvary;
On the Lamb all my sin was laid,
My debt is paid, O praise His name!

The wrath of God poured on His Son,
In His great love, the work was done.
God’s holiness was satisfied,
By Jesus’ death I’m justified.

(Refrain)

From dark to light, Christ made me see,
And from my sins He ransomed me;
What wondrous love, what sacrifice,
The spotless Lamb, He gave His life.

(Refrain)

New life is mine, in Him complete,
Accepted at the mercy seat;
A child of God, by Him beloved,
I’ll sing His praise fore’er above.

(Refrain)

I Waited Patient for the Lord

Sheet Music
Tune Name: NEW SONG
Words: Isaac Watts;
Paraphrase of Psalm 40:1-3
Music: Karissa Carlson

I waited patient for the Lord,
He bowed to hear my cry;
He saw me resting on His Word,
And brought salvation nigh.
He brought salvation nigh.

He raised me from a horrid pit
Where mourning long I lay,
And from my bonds released my feet,
Deep bonds of miry clay.

Firm on a rock He made me stand,
And taught my cheerful tongue
To praise the wonders of His hand,
In a new and thankful song.
In a new and thankful song.

Jesus, Keep My Eyes On Thee

Sheet Music
Tune Name: DUTCH HOLLOW
Words & Music: Karissa Carlson

Jesus, keep my eyes on Thee,
On Thy glorious majesty,
On Thy wondrous love to me;
Jesus, keep my eyes on Thee.

Savior, make me wholly pure,
Free from sin and worldly lure,
Make me strong, so to endure;
Savior, make me wholly pure.

Captain, help me fight the fight,
With Thy perfect pow’r and might,
Clothed in armor, truth, and light;
Captain, help me fight the fight.

Father, fill me with Thy love,
Help me seek what lies above,
Telling all the world thereof;
Father, fill me with Thy love.

Spirit, give to me Thy grace,
As I run in life’s short race,
‘Til I see my Savior’s face;
Spirit, give to me Thy grace.

Jesus Only, This My Plea

Sheet Music
Tune Name: ONLY JESUS
Words & Music: Karissa Carlson

Jesus only, this my plea,
For more of Him, and less of me;
Seeking only His dear face
And resting in His pard’ning grace.

Trusting only Christ alone
Who, for my sin, He did atone;
Took my place at Calvary
To bear my guilt and penalty.

Now ’tis mine but to believe,
His precious work of grace receive;
Looking to the Crucified
In Whom our God is satisfied.

Living only unto Him,
So let the world grow ever dim;
Giving Him my life, my all,
And following my Savior’s call.

Jesus only, this my praise,
To worship Him for all my days;
Showing forth His Gospel true
That all may see Him shining through.

Occupy ‘Til He Comes

Sheet Music

Audio for this song is temporarily unavailable.

Tune Name: OCCUPY
Words: Julia Carlson
Music: Karissa Carlson

I’ve been given a storehouse with gems of rare kind
All laid up in God’s Word to me,
A storehouse of wisdom and knowledge to find;
Will I occupy ’til He comes?

Refrain:
Will I occupy ’til He comes?
Will I occupy ’til He comes?
As a steward commissioned and called by the King,
Will I occupy ’til He comes?

I’ve been given the privilege of drawing near
And there praying for souls in need,
And giving Him praise for each blessing found here;
Will I occupy ’til He comes?

(Refrain)

I’ve been given the tools for the work He has planned
For His servant on earth to do,
The vast spread of resources giv’n from His hand;
Will I occupy ’til He comes?

(Refrain)

I’ve been given a mind, and two hands, and two feet
For to hear and obey His will,
And lips I’ve been given His love to repeat;
Will I occupy ’til He comes?

(Refrain)
